Diana Vreeland's Apartment - The Garden From Hell

Diana Vreeland’s Apartment : The Garden From Hell

March 12, 2013 by The CoF

“ There are several things about the apartment that accord well enough with anybody’s expectations. Of course the “garden in hell” turns out to be neither remotely hellish nor particularly horticultural. But quite aside from the flamboyant scarlet-flowered cotton of the walls and curtains of the living room, there is undeniably an abundance of the color red: red carpets, red-lacquered doors, closet linings, and picture frames. True to form, when Vreeland consented to have her rooms photographed for the present article, […]

The pair were celebrated not only in France but also in America, where they designed one of New York’s greatest Déco interiors: the Nelson Rockefeller apartment on Fifth Avenue. Temperley, using her dining-room table as a makeshift studio, designs paper patterns for bespoke bridal dresses that she prefers to work on in the peace and quiet of the countryside. Cage My Body!

February 1, 2013 by The CoF

What’s up with our fascination for putting things in a cage? Cages are oppressive, still we’re fascinated by them. It is just how our complicated minds work! Body cages are a bridge between armor/self-protection and underwear/exhibitionism. This strange interplay is an important theme for our times, and was reflected previously by the ever-popular S&M trends of recent seasons (latex, tough shoes, body-con, corsets etc.) Now all those trends have started to seem tired, but the ideas behind them remain relevant.
