The Secret Behind The Chanel Jacket

March 15, 2013 by The CoF

The secret behind the Chanel jacket is that it’s actually a men’s jacket… As a symbol of Chanel’s style and elegance, the jacket takes its place as one of the House’s icons. Endlessly desirable and reinvented with each season, its modernity and apparent simplicity make it an indispensable item in any woman’s wardrobe. Conceived by Mademoiselle Chanel in the 1950s and inspired by Austrian jackets for men, this tailored jacket, when combined with a skirt reaching just below the knee line, became […]

Yves Saint Laurent’s Timeless Left Bank Apartment

March 12, 2013 by The CoF

“Saint Laurent’s Paris apartment on the Left Bank was originally designed by Bérard’s friend and sometime collaborator—the icon of Art Déco design—Jean-Michel Frank. Frank and Bérard’s interiors were madly dapper and stylish yet at the same time modern classics. The pair were celebrated not only in France but also in America, where they designed one of New York’s greatest Déco interiors: the Nelson Rockefeller apartment on Fifth Avenue. Yves Saint Laurent’s apartment was also originally designed for an American, which […]

VIONNET creative directorGoga Ashkenazi believes in making couture more “accessible” for her customers – who, she says, often find the concept of haute couture “excessive and unnecessary” in today’s economic climate. “Being a woman myself and having been a client of couture, I realise that the more special a couture dress is, the less usage it will get,” Ashkenazi explained. “The prices for couture dresses in the main fashion houses range from the tens and sometimes hundreds of thousands [of pounds], and […]

Cage My Body!

February 1, 2013 by The CoF

What’s up with our fascination for putting things in a cage? Cages are oppressive, still we’re fascinated by them. It is just how our complicated minds work! Body cages are a bridge between armor/self-protection and underwear/exhibitionism. This strange interplay is an important theme for our times, and was reflected previously by the ever-popular S&M trends of recent seasons (latex, tough shoes, body-con, corsets etc.) Now all those trends have started to seem tired, but the ideas behind them remain relevant. A […]

Vintage Couture Auction At Christie’s

January 30, 2013 by The CoF

Vintage Couture auction at Christie’s goes to show just how valuable so-called second hand fashion can actually be. Haute couture pieces from bygone eras are becoming rarer and rarer, and collectors are increasingly starting to treat exceptional garments like works of visual art. Christie’s wasn’t prepared for the results. The vintage clothing auction, which included pieces from fashion goddess Elsa Schiaparelli and Jeanne Lanvin brought in more than 700,000 euro. A special black jacket from Schiaparelli made in 1939 sold […]

Behind the Scenes At Spring 2013 Couture

January 25, 2013 by The CoF

The couture shows are the red carpet leading up to the red carpet, the season that finds a dreamy, romantic forest sprouting under the domed ceiling of the Grand Palais, the week when one minute you might see Shakespearean fairy queens floating down the runway, and space goddesses the next. And yet, in the midst of a world obsessed with creating grand statements, the most thrilling sights are often found in the smaller moments. From Versace to Armani Privé, from backstage to […]

Valentino Haute Couture Spring 2013 Collection

January 24, 2013 by The CoF

Parks are officially the hottest things in high fashion. After Chanel’s forest set and Dior’s undulating boxwoods, Valentino creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli also took their couture collection down the garden path.   This is neither a judgment nor a slight. Gardens are glorious, and the Roman duo nourished their theme with a distinctive Italian touch, from the spaghetti-like embroideries coiled on coats and dresses — echoing the curlicues on fancy metal gates and grills — […]

Jean Paul Gaultier Spring Couture 2013 Collection

January 23, 2013 by The CoF

COUTURE season seems to be the perfect time to find inspiration when it comes to planning this summer’s holidays – Giorgio Armani took us to Turkey yesterday and this afternoon Jean Paul Gaultier went to Morocco. It was a rich and varied collection with each and every exit completely different to the one before it – so bulbous stripes led the way on dresses of asymmetric or off-the-shoulder style, followed by super-cinched tulle gowns heavily held at the waist by big gold belts, […]

Serkan Cura Spring Haute Couture 2013 Collection

January 22, 2013 by The CoF

This “Birds of Eden” collection was another love letter from Turkish-born Serkan Cura to the noble craft of feather-making. There were a variety of flamboyant shoulder pieces on top of skimpy corset dresses in see-through fabrics. An XXL flower hairpiece descending all the way down to the sleeves was even more sculptural, while delicately woven feather blazers had a contemporary feel. Among the finale numbers was a creamy feather tutu worthy of a 21st-century production of “Swan Lake.” Photo by […]

Ulyana Sergeenko Spring Couture 2013 Collection

January 22, 2013 by The CoF

A giant book of fairy tales was propped open at the end of Ulyana Sergeenko’s Yellow Brick Road-like runway, and the well-worn original tome, featuring illustrations by Yuri Vasnetsov, circulated the front row. Inside its weathered pages, alligators opened their jaws to spilling breadbaskets and mice crawled gleefully over a caged cat. The Russian designer’s second couture show recounted equally strange stories while brimming with charm and, occasionally, a sense of wonderment. A soundtrack of spaghetti Westerns, snippets of “Rocky” […]

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2013 Collection

January 22, 2013 by The CoF

GIAMBATTISTA VALLI has been officially part of the couture line-up now for three seasons, having made a guest appearance for autumn/winter 2011-12. Designers typically receive appellation only after they’ve showed couture for five years, but the Paris Fédération Française de la Couture decided that the standard of Valli’s work was so high that he was eligible for the honour – and so he’s part of the gang now. And it’s easy to see why. He tackled tricksome shapes that wouldn’t so […]

Saint Laurent Men’s Collection Fall 2013

January 21, 2013 by The CoF

Hedi Slimane at full Hedi Slimane-ness, Saint Laurent was everything you’d guess it to be. Skinny goes without saying, as does gaunt Rock n’ Roll boys. Add to the pile touches of grunge with plaid shirts, show off beaded jackets, military as worn by Pete & Co. and a rather nice baseball jacket offering a slight change to proceedings. Disheveled glamour for (anaemic) young folk and plenty of androgyny to keep you guessing. It looks like  Isabel Marant meets Balmain to me! […]
