Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. – Hal Borland We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day. – Edith Lovejoy Pierce Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink and swore his last oath. New Year’s Eve is just around the corner. It’s likely that at least one person will ask you what your resolutions are for the year ahead. Yet as you know, it’s not so easy to keep your resolve as life returns to normal and your old habits of mind […]

It may be debatable if “the unexamined life is not worth living,” but everyone should certainly take the coming of a new year as a reason to reexamine her closet. BAZAAR recruited ten stylish insiders to tell us how they’ll be updating their approach to fashion for 2013. Claire Distenfeld, Owner Fivestory “I’ve loved the year of 2012 and all the patterns and colors that it had to offer. I find myself simplifying things when looking into the new year. I’ve honed in […]
A PARTY is the perfect opportunity to try out a more daring make-up look than you might normally, and the autumn/winter 2012-13 catwalks were rife with beauty inspiration for the season’s soirees. If you’re wearing black, then why not add a pop of colour with Anna Sui‘s quirky blue liner, Stella McCartney‘s cobalt mascara or Thakoon‘s striking red lips? Or perhaps you’re going for a more smouldering look – Gucci‘s vermilion lips or Jason Wu‘s feline emerald eyes should do the trick. So, whatever you […]

Wendy Rowe spills her secret for the perfect smoky eyes “Don’t apply kohl eyeliner directly to the eye anymore, first draw a little on the cheek, then apply the liner with a beveled brush directly to the lash for a smokier look.” Wendy Rowe, Beauty artistic consultant.

The show outside of the shows is here to stay and one thing that has become evidently clear from the street style parade is that more is more. Whether wearing baroque embellishment, layers upon layers of jewelry, or mixing and matching prints from head to toe, established experts like Taylor Tomasi Hill, Caroline Issa, and Tamu McPherson continued to display the best trends of the year, while fresh faces such as Anne-Catherine Frey and Sofía Sanchez Barrenechea added an eclectic touch and created looks that were anything but […]

It’s never quite clear what causes something to make the successful transformation from runway look to ubiquitous item in stores and in closets. This year, it was a particular playful time for women’s style: Futuristic ensembles were a modern and welcome addition to any wardrobe, sweet pastel hues became the unexpected color choice on the red carpet, and an extra sparkle in embellished or baroque touches was spotted on everything from collars to bags. As the year ends, we look […]

SEEING DOUBLE: Melissa magazine’s more fashion-minded readers might do a double take when the 2013 summer edition of Plastic Dreams lands in their mailboxes. The lead fashion story, “A Colorful Dream,” looks strikingly similar to one that ran on the cover of W Korea in March. Alek Wek is on the cover of Melissa’s Brazilian edition, but a fashion flashback can be found on the back cover, which features seven models in rainbow-colored wigs splayed about on a pastel-colored set. The […]

Saying “Merry Christmas” is second nature to us during the holiday season. Let’s discover some other traditions and how they started. The tradition of sending Christmas cards started in 1843 in England. Before then, greetings were written by hand, and it became almost impossible to send one to everyone you knew. It started as a way to remind people about the need for taking care of the poor. The first card was illustrated by John Callcott Horsley, had the phrase, […]

Hedi Slimane has been all over the fashion radar for his work at Yves Saint Laurent, but it appears he hasn’t left his passion for photography behind. For the Spring 2013 campaign, Miu Miu took a page out of parent brand Prada‘s book, choosing to forego the hard casting decisions by hiring every girl that made it to the short list. It was a varied bunch of model types: the only thing Adriana Lima, Doutzen Kroes, Arizona Muse, Malgosia Bela, Bette Franke, and Martha Hunt have in common is that they’ve now all been photographed by Inez & Vinoodh for Miu Miu’s Spring 2013 ad campaign. Melvin Sokolsky (born in 1938) is an American photographer and film director. Born in New York City, Sokolsky had no formal training in photography, but started to use his father’s box camera at about the age of ten. Always analytical, he started to realize the role that emulsion played as he compared his own photographs with those his father had kept in albums through the years. “I could never make my photographs of Butch the dog look like the pearly […]
T BY ALEXANDER WANG F/W 12 Daniel Jackson – Director Alexander Wang is always on the pulse of what is happening right now, so of course he enlists musician of the moment Azealia Banks for the F/W film for his spinoff line T by Alexander Wang. The high energy clip captures the youthful, in your face and effortless cool of Wang’s clientele and Azealia’s charm.
DIOR SECRET GARDEN Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin – Directors Who else could take Versailles and transform it into a whirlwind fashion moment? Dior’s show stopper video was as much a tribute to the power of the iconic French brand, as it was a showcase for the clothes themselves.
IN THE DESERT SUN Michael Pitt – Director Hard-edged pieces from Ann Demeulemeester set against a beautiful desert backdrop and filmed in a way that is elegant and engaging.
PRADA F/W 12 – CHESS Steven Meisel – Director Prada is the thinking woman’s fashion brand, so of course Miuccia would have her print clad beauties settling down for a nice game of chess. Meisel’s video version of the fall campaign played like the start to a particularly avant-garde art film with an exceptionally beautiful cast.
ISHIKO Santiago & Mauricio Sierra (Cadence New York) – Directors An ethereal trip into an manga-inspired fantasy land, Santiago and Mauricio created vivd world all their own and Ginta Lapina played muse in head to toe Azzedine Alaia. If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if your favorite high drama anime came to life, take a look at this clip created just for MDC.
FANCLUB Ruth Hogben – Director Ruth Hogben is known for her stark fashion films for the likes of Gareth Pugh, but that doesn’t mean that she can’t do soft and sweet. Her vintage cinema inspired clip for Louis Vuitton, is pure glamour straight out of the studio system days.
KRAV MAGA SELF DEFENSE Nick Knight – Director Most fashion films offer a glossy break from reality, but Nick Knight’s self defense series for Showstudio gave practical advice in a glossy package. Sure, you probably won’t have to fend off attackers while wearing Givenchy, but a little Krav Maga knowledge is a good thing to have. Lara Stone’s ability to maintain her model poise, even while kicking some serious butt leaves us in awe.
A THERAPY Roman Polanski – Director With Roman Polanski directing, Sir Ben Kingsley and Helena Bonham Carter starring and a full-fledged premiere at Cannes, Prada’s mini film was the most star-powered of the bunch as well as one of the most entertaining. Most films created for fashion focus simply on visuals, so this clip with it’s cheeky plot was a welcome breath of fresh air.

The best ads of the year went beyond simply pushing product, they sold an image that was aspirational and pushed the boundaries of their brand’s identity. Once you get past the main editorial and its glossy tribute to the timeless Jerry Hall, the new Vogue Italia offers you a look at another iconic blonde beauty of the 1970s. Though perhaps lesser known than some of her disco-era ilk, Donna Jordan ranks among the most influential models of all time. Before Lara Stone was even born, Donna was the bleach browed, gap-toothed beauty who set the trend. Whether she was being shot by photographers like Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin and Oliviero Toscani, or appearing […]
