Sofia Coppola became the guest editor of a special issue of W magazine that comes as a supplement for the May 2014 issue which will go on sale on Monday .
Chief editor of W magazine, Stefano Tonchi helped the oscar winner screenwriter to fulfill one of her childhood dreams that of editing a magazine.
On the cover of this special edition shot by Juergen Teller, Coppola put the American actress Kristen Dunst who starred in Coppola’s movie “Marie Antoinette.”
“As a kid, I loved magazines. That’s where I got a lot of my interest in photography and fashion,” Sofia Coppola told WWD. “I remember as a kid W being so glamorous and it being so different from my reality.”
As Coppola appeared in the past on the cover of W , Tonchi said he noticed her strong “editing skills, fresh eye and enthusiasm.” And also the fact that from the 22 advertising pages, 19 came from the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton… With which Coppola has a great relationship, being one of Louis Vuitton ambassador for so many years.
Inside the issue you can find an interview with Dunst, another Q&A by Coppola with Marisa Berenson in Marrakech, a story from Cornelia Guest on her mother’s best entertaining tips and an item by Paul Fortune on his design process for Marc Jacobs’ media room. Essentially the issue is about Coppola’s lifestyle and friends.
“I’m going back to my film career after doing this,” she said, noting that while she “loved it,” once was enough. (On a side note, she admitted to enjoying talking products with the beauty editor and checking out the beauty closet.)
“I never realized how much work goes into a magazine. It’s kind of similar to doing a movie,” Coppola said. “I’m surprised how they do it every month.”
