December 7, 2012 by The CoF

By Julia Neel When invitations to Philip Treacy’s show arrived prior to London Fashion Week, most people asked, “Why?”—why had the milliner decided to stage a runway show at London’s Royal Courts of Justice, and why now?“I had kind of a lot to say,” the milliner points out. “I love African girls, and I love Michael Jackson—he’s the ultimate African-American entertainer. The 2013 Campari Calendar Kisses Superstitions Goodbye

December 6, 2012 by The CoF

By Meghan Young Actress Penelope Cruz tests her luck in the 2013 Campari Calendar. Aptly titled, ‘Kiss Superstition Goodbye,’ it finds the Spanish beauty surrounded by taboo elements including a glaring of black cats, opened umbrellas indoors and dangerously cracked mirrors. Of course, she shows confidently that these are all unfounded fears perpetuated by superstitious societies. Helping her to bravely confront these fears is the Italian alcohol beverage, which is Cruz’s constant companion in the 2013 Campari Calendar. Shot by […]

What’s Contemporary By Patrick And Victor Demarchelier

December 5, 2012 by The CoF

Timeless is a word we all use, and one we often bear in mind with focused intention when creating images today. Despite the ubiquity of the concept of timelessness, to successfully achieve such magic is a feat very few can accomplish, much less accomplish time after time. The name Demarchelier hangs like an iconic banner of such imagery over the pages of countless magazines and endless advertising campaigns today and through decades past. As contemporary is frequently defined as ‘A […]

December 5, 2012 by The CoF

Open up the new Vogue Italia and you’ll see the stunning Vanessa Axente looking amazing in Steven Meisel‘s ultra-chic imagery, but take a closer look and you may get a case of deja vu. Don’t those long blonde waves look familiar, isn’t the outsized eroticism and in your face glamour reminiscent of a time, a place? If you started to hear the Rolling Stones playing the background and got a distinctly 70s feel from the entire endeavor, you’re on the right track. Meisel looks back […]

By Erik Maza, with contributions from Samantha Conti, Evan Clark, Lisa Lookwood Wondering what Anna Wintour wants has become a cottage industry of its own. Does she want to be a diplomat? Tribute To Gianni Versace

December 2, 2012 by The CoF

Gianni Versace’s clothes are known for their striking colours, materials and cuts: sexy to the point of vulgarity. Like all good Italian boys, Gianni Versace learnt from his mother, who taught him first to cut and then make clothes, as she ran a small tailor-shop to support the family. Gianni loved designing the clothes himself and soon he was selling them out of his mother’s shop. He moved on, furthering his understanding of the rag trade by working as a […]

Fashion Enterprise to Combat Slavery

November 23, 2012 by The CoF

Written by Krystle Corpuz Globalization has become synonymous with the concept of cheap labor. Competitive fashion markets stay relevant if they can produce their goods cheap and in bulk. However, women in the developing world are bringing globalization to their level and producing clothing and accessories to help them become more sustainable and support an alternative livelihood to trafficking and slave labor.     Many fashion brands have begun to take their impact on the environment into consideration. As former Editor-in-Chief of French Vogue, Carine Roitfeld‘s distinctive aesthetic has been famously summed up in one word: Irreverent. Although Carine Roitfeld is no longer the editor of FrenchVogue, she remains steadily at the perch of the fashion world, standing atop those super-high bondage-referencing heels that she partly made a staple of Parisian style (along with close-fitting pencil skirts, black leather, cinch-waist toppers, and if any woman dared follow her dictates, a little nipple).
